Wood is simply, usable timber from trees. It is divided into two groups: Softwood and hardwood., although man-made wood and plastic wood is now commonplace. It is available as planks, boards and as plywood.

Generally, hardwood comes from a deciduous tree which loses its leaves annually and softwood comes from a conifer, which usually remains evergreen. Hardwoods tend to be slower growing, and are therefore usually more dense.

Wood can be so soft that is can be cut with a hobby knife, like Balsa Wood and so hard it needs to be cut with a high speed steel blade, like Ebony.

The choice of wood is critical to the design process; indoor or outdoor, use, aesthetic, finish, durability, budget, technology and process to be used, all impact. We recommend Wood Database  to identify and select what timber to use.

We have several suppliers of exotic hardwoods, softwoods and boards.
