A simplest mosaic technique,where the tesserae are stuck directly to the backing material. When they have set, the mosaic will be grouted. Simple as that.
The main reason for being able to use this technique is when the tesserae (tiles) are the same thickness. This allows for a single plane on the surface. If the tesserae are different thicknesses then the Indirect or double technique are best.
